Occupational Therapists work with people with injuries or disabilities who are unable to complete the tasks, activities or jobs that are important to them. Occupational Therapists solve the problems that may be preventing you from completing your activities of daily living. They are also trained in injury prevention, health and safety, and ergonomics.
When an injury, illness, disability or other problem limits your ability to take care of yourself, participate in paid or unpaid work, or enjoy your leisure time, Occupational Therapists can help by adapting the environment, modifying a task, teaching a new skill, or educating you and your family, to enable you to participate in the activities that are important in your life.
The word “occupation” in Occupational Therapy refers to tasks or activities that are important to you in your stage of life. For instance, the “occupation” of a child with a disability may be “play” or learning to write. An “occupation” of someone with a spinal cord injury may be independently dressing or feeding themselves. The “occupation” of someone with a hand injury may be cooking, and they need to re-learn how to grip, pinch and handle objects in the kitchen. An Occupational Therapist breaks down the task you need to learn and finds a way for you to get it done.
